Nordic Energy Systems and Clean Technology in a New Geopolitical Reality

  • pr-alarm11:15 AM - 12:00 PM
  • pr-locationStrategic Conference, Hall C, Assembly Level

The Nordic countries all have strong energy systems and are far advanced when it comes to tackling climate change. We have different prerequisites and priorities, but many challenges and opportunities are common to the entire Nordic Region, and we support common ambitions. At the same time, the Nordic Region must contend with a new geopolitical reality that affects the security and supply chains of its nations.

The energy transition will require the development of new technologies, and this is an area in which the Nordic Region has already proven itself to be a leading player globally. There is every indication that CCUS must be a part of the solution for the Nordic countries to become carbon neutral by 2050, and success requires rapid and immediate development. Both Canada and the Nordics are well-equipped in this regard: we have the technology, the competence, and the natural resources. Consequently, we also have a lot to learn from each other.

Based on these foundations, this panel featuring the five Nordic ambassadors to Canada will serve as an important opportunity to highlight tangible opportunities for cooperation between Canada and the Nordics in this field.

  • pr-locationStrategic Conference, Hall C, Assembly Level

With a new federal government under Mark Carney and a fresh infrastructure bill on the table, Canada’s emissions cap is facing renewed scrutiny. This fireside chat will unpack how CCS fits into a shifting policy landscape, and whether the cap will hold, bend, or break.

  • With PM Carney signaling flexibility and no firm commitment to the emissions cap, is repeal or reform on the horizon?
  • Does the new bill accelerate CCS deployment, or just add complexity to an already crowded policy space?
  • How are energy leaders responding to the cap’s uncertainty, and what does this mean for CCS investment and timelines?
  • What should CCS developers and policymakers be doing now to stay ahead of potential shifts in federal direction?
